It’s not news that Kylie Jenner has become a Gen Z beauty and style icon thanks to her signature look and massively popular Lip Kits and today we had the chance to meet the woman behind that look, makeup artist Joyce Bonelli. A longtime friend and makeup artist to several members of the Kardashian clan, Bonelli has also worked with stars like Lindsay Lohan and Nicki Minaj and helped bring contouring to the mainstream. We had a little powwow with Bonelli to hear about the wild looks she created for our Kylie cover, which was shot by Erik Madigan Heck and styled by Rushka Bergman.
What were some of the inspirations behind the looks you created?
[It was all thanks to] the genius Rushka Bergman. Rushka had a very clear vision to do a more modern and simple makeup that was still compatible with the ’50s pop art hairstyle.
How can we recreate some of these looks at home? What advice do you have for toning these dramatic looks down and making them more of a daytime thing?
I think that the only thing that is truly out there and would be difficult to recreate at home are the wigs. You can recreate these beauty looks at home because there isn’t any over the top, crazy detailed eye makeup. You can recreate the lip by dramatically overdrawing and layering liners and lipcolors. For the rest of the face keep it neutral! Comb and fill in your brows, stay with neutrals and browns for your eyes with a mod winged liner and mascara. Contouring is minimal here, stick with a classic blush for definition on your cheek bones! If you wanted to go all the way and rock a wig, go for it!

To what extent did you want to do something different from Kylie’s usual makeup looks versus staying true to her style and aesthetic?
Again, there was a very clear vision for how Rushka wanted Kylie styled, which was 1950s pop art-inspired. As you can see she still has her signature, statement ‘Kylie lip’ throughout all of the looks.
What products did you use?
NARS, Sephora, Urban Decay, MAC, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Tom Ford, Clarins, Shiseido.
What are the top products everyone needs in their collection?
A killer tinted moisturizer, a great mascara and a Beauty Blender.

If you only had time to do two things from your beauty routin in the morning, what would you do?
I never leave the house without a tinted moisturizer and mascara!
What beauty trend would you like to see go away in 2016? What beauty trend do you hope becomes more popular in 2016?
A beauty trend I would love to go away is “painted” on eyebrows for everyday looks. I would love to see more and more lashes on EVERYONE!
